Segmented vessels are time consuming with up to thousands of intricate pieces perfectly cut and sanded so they glue together without gaps or irregularity.  Each layer is made as a ring and glued and stacked then carefully turned on the lathe.  With different types of wood it is easy to make mistakes and gouge or break the vessel as not all the wood cuts the same as you are turning.

To make it more challenging Nelson keeps the turned wall thickness between 1/8" and 3/16" making the vessels extremely lightweight.   It's like holding a wooden balloon.

With the degeneration of his eyesight, Nelson no longer turns these vessels on his lathe. If you are lucky to own one of these vessels enjoy the uniqueness and exclusivity of them.  There are a few pieces still available from the artist.  To find out more information on buying pieces contact: Nelson@NelsonCassinger.com
